The Government of Saskatchewan, in recognition of International Literacy Day, has proclaimed September 8, 2023, as “Literacy Day” for the province. The day provides an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the many ways literacy enhances lives from newborns to seniors through language development, learning opportunities and employment stability. Literacy contributes to well-being and better social, health and economic outcomes for individuals and communities. The proclamation for this day was requested by the Saskatchewan Literacy Network.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) first proclaimed the day in 1966. The world has celebrated International Literacy Day on September 8 since then. This year’s international theme is “Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies."
